Intramuscular Stimulation

What is IMS?

Intramuscular Stimulation, otherwise known as IMS, involves the use of needles, similar to ones used in traditional acupuncture, into the tight and painful muscles to relax the muscle and stimulate a healing process and restoring the muscle. The mechanical stimulation that occurs with the insertion of the needle provides a therapeutic effect. IMS is a treatment typically performed upon patients who experience pain that are generated by nerves. This method of therapy will relax the tensed sensation one may experience, which signifies the muscles are weak and shorten.

This treatment is particularly effective for deep muscles which are difficult to reach with other types of treatment. Our goal in this procedure is to reduce muscle shortening that results in the nerve becoming irritated which is what is creating tension.

What to expect?

Once arriving to Physio4Care for your IMS treatment, our registered physiotherapist will begin your session by examining your range of motion, function and mobility, and strength. After that, you and the physiotherapist will create a treatment plan that perfectly suits your condition that will reach the goal intended. Following, will be the insertion of very fine needles that will reduce your pain and lengthen your shortened muscles to experience a relaxing sensation. The needles are typically painless, however if a patient begins to feel uncomfortable, our physiotherapist at Physio4Care will adjust the needle, to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
